New fines came into force from 13 January 2009 for breaking rules on obtaining work permits.

Any Ukrainian employer illegally hiring foreign nationals now faces a fine of UAH 12,100 (previously UAH 850).

All Ukrainian employers wishing to hire foreign nationals must complete the work permit formalities within a month.

Additionally the new Law of 13 January 2009 introduced that from now work permits are also required for foreign nationals hired to perform work or services related to the Euro 2012 football championships in Ukraine conducting and those assigned to work in Ukraine under the Product Sharing Agreements. Previously these categories of employees were considered as exceptions.

Moreover, when applying for a work permit, employers must now certify in writing to the State Employment Centre that the foreign national will not be given any work which is required to be done by a Ukrainian citizen and will not have access to any state secrets.
