Jana Simmons (Of Counsel-Michigan) co-authored "Tribal Sovereign Immunity, Its Origins and Development," the first in a series of articles to be provided by DRI's Native Nations Law Task Force. Over the course of the next year or so, the series of articles will discuss legal issues encountered throughout tribal, state and federal courts in civil cases. This first installment explains tribal sovereignty and tribal sovereignty immunity – its origins and its status today – and how these unique laws and concepts can create a minefield for insurers and civil defense attorneys who are unaware. The article also provides an introduction to the Native Nations Law Task Force, of which Jana is chairperson.
