Law firms have been among the countless workplaces faced with adapting to remote working during the COVID-19 pandemic. The transition to videoconferences and virtual collaboration has impacted the lawyer experience, and Liz Stern, head of Mayer Brown's Global Mobility & Migration practice, emphasized the importance of maintaining communication—both with clients and employees—in a December 22 Legaltech News  article (subscription required).

“It's very important to create new communication vehicles, whether it's a digital tool or a dashboard report,” she said. This will keep clients up to speed on what is being handled and if deadlines are being met.

With a vaccine in sight, firms may be exploring a hybrid approach to allow more lawyers to return to the office while others remain at home. The potential for communication gaps will become more of a risk as this physical/virtual split becomes a reality. Liz stressed the value of creating meaningful team experiences during this phase. “Make sure the rules are known about how you are supposed to function together as a team,” she said.
