In an effort to combat COVID-19, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued executive order 2020-42 on April 9, 2020, which extends her prior "Stay Home, Stay Safe" order until April 30, 2020 to include advertising and other restrictions.
Stores which employ "critical infrastructure workers" (e.g., stores which sell groceries, pet supplies, medical supplies, or home appliance retailers) are allowed to remain open. However, such stores with over 50,000 square feet of customer retail space must also abide by the following:
(1) Limit the number of customers to 4 people per 1,000 square feet of customer floor space;
(2) Close areas of the store dedicated to (a) carpet or flooring, (b) furniture, (c) garden centers and plant nurseries, or (d) paint;
(3) By April 13, 2020, these stores should not advertise or promote goods that are not groceries, medical supplies, or items that are necessary to maintain the safety, sanitation, and basic operation of residences; and
(4) Create at least two hours per week of dedicated shopping time for vulnerable populations, defined as people over 60 years old, pregnant women, and people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, and lung disease, and heart disease.
