The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released the provisional statistics on fatal injuries in the workplace for 2011/2012. This covers the twelve month period from 01 April 2011 to 31 March 2012. Figures will be finalised during the course of July 2013 which allows time for ongoing investigations of workplace fatal injuries which are often complex, time-consuming and can lead to further revelations which need to be evaluated. This also covers Regulation 4 of RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995) which deals with the situation where someone dies as a result of their injury within a year of their accident.
By way of summary, the previous downward trend of fatal injuries over the last four years appears to have levelled-off. The main points to take from the statistics are:
- The provisional figure for the number of workers fatally injured in 2011/2012 is 173
- The figure of 173 is 12% lower than the average for the past five years (196)
- The finalised figure for 2010/2011 is 175
