Before filing for a registration, it is recommended to request an Official Phonetic Search. For our VIP clients, we provide this service on a complimentary basis.

Once we have the confirmation from the client, we file the application for registration before the IEPI (Intellectual Property Institute). The registration should be individual for each international classification to be filed. The distinctive sign is then published in the IP Gazette to allow oppositions. IEPI makes an internal review also. When all these steps are completed (without oppositions/objections) this Institution issues a Resolution approving the registration. Upon this resolution, the Certification of the trademark registration is issued and is valid for 10 years.

The registration process takes around 6-8 months. If oppositions by third parties are filed, the registration process may take more time, due that the IEPI should analyze such oppositions, require evidence, and take a decision. This decision may be appealed or it is also possible to file an application for revocation.
