Foley Hoag LLP has been ranked among the top 20 firms by Global Arbitration Review in the 2024 GAR 30, its annual guide to the world's top 30 specialist international arbitration practices. The publication highlighted the firm's "excellent record of defence wins for states facing hefty investment arbitrations," stating that the "firm's record in public international law disputes is even more impressive."

In announcing the GAR 30 list during Paris Arbitration Week, the publication highlighted Foley Hoag's International Litigation and Arbitration practice for achieving strong client results, including:

  • Securing a victory for Nepal in its first investment arbitration.
  • Leading Japan to victory in its first investment treaty arbitration.
  • Achieving a complete dismissal for the Bangladesh Power Development Board of an ICC arbitration initiated by a subsidiary of the Silicon Valley-based SunEdison.

The publication also highlighted Foley Hoag's representation of Armenia in various disputes with Azerbaijan arising from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict; its significant Latin America profile, including its various cases for Peru and its State-owned entities; and the firm's work in the various ICJ and ITLOS advisory opinion proceedings, including on the obligations of States to address climate change.

The GAR 30 quotes several clients who praise the firm's "very professional approach, case management and creativity," and "diverse set of exceptionally qualified lawyers who provide legal assistance in a culturally sensitive manner." Clients also described partner Constantinos Salonidis as a "leader with a team spirit with a deep knowledge of practice" and a "strategy-maestro," while partner Christina Hioureas is highlighted as an "excellent team leader" who is "sharp and energetic."

Foley Hoag's International Litigation and Arbitration practice consists of nearly 60 attorneys based in its Washington, D.C., New York, Boston and Paris offices, and specializes in the representation of sovereign States and State-owned enterprises in disputes before international courts and arbitral tribunals.

"We are pleased to be named to this prestigious list," said Salonidis, Global Co-Chair of Foley Hoag's International Litigation & Arbitration Department, alongside Hioureas and Diana Paraguacuto-Mahéo. "The ranking reflects our dedication to serving our clients by delivering innovative and top-quality services to defend their interests in complex arbitration matters across the globe."

The GAR 30 ranks firms primarily on the number of arbitral hearings conducted over a two-year period. Firms receive additional credit for working on higher-value disputes, and for activities that reflect a strong reputation, such as arbitrator appointments received by firm members.
