In compliance with the Merchant Shipping (Accident and Incident Safety Investigations) regulations of 2011, the Maltese maritime authorities have announced a streamlined process for reporting marine accidents and incidents involving Maltese registered ships or foreign-flagged vessels in Maltese waters.

Effective immediately, reporting obligations can now be fulfilled conveniently through an online platform on the Marine Safety Investigation Unit (MSIU) website. This update aims to expedite the reporting process, ensuring swift communication of occurrences while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.

It is worth noting that in the case of a maritime accident, the severity of that occurrence shall not be the determining factor of what is reported because the MSIU has the legal remit to investigate even those accidents with minor consequences. It is imperative to note that the reporting obligation extends to incidents (near accidents).

For this purpose, Masters serving on board and ISM managers are encouraged to utilize the new online reporting system accessible via the reporting link on the MSIU website. Additionally, accident and incident notification reports can still be submitted by mail to the following address:

Head of Marine Safety Investigation
Marine Safety Investigation Unit
No. 2, Level 1, Notabile Road
Fleur-de-Lys, Birkirkara BKR1876
Malta
