Earlier today, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri and the CEO of Malta Enterprise Kurt Farrugia, addressed a press-conference to provide further information regarding the COVID-19 Wage Supplement (click to access the link) previously announced by the Government to aid Maltese businesses and employees during the COVID-19 crisis.

Malta Enterprise has begun reviewing and evaluating the applications received, and it has also adopted a system of check and balances to ensure the avoidance of abuse. In fact, the CEO has stressed that the following measures are being adopted;

  • Malta Enterprise will be sending a note to all employers to confirm that employees have been paid and that they are still employed by them.
  • Failure of passing on the wage supplement to the employees will be considered a criminal offence.
  • A list of companies in receipt of such funds will be published by Malta Enterprise.
  • Malta Enterprise will conduct spot-checks via calls to employees on approved applications to confirm that wage supplement has been passed on.

Finally, Minister Schembri explained that employers who submitted approved applications shall expect the first payment as from next week.
