The Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner (OPC) has issued a guidance document which will contribute to the understanding of responsibilities for the oversight and enforcement of Canada's anti-spam law, known as CASL.
The Commissioner has responsibilities that are shared with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and the federal Competition Bureau
The responsibilities of the OPC will be focused on violations of CASL involving the harvesting of electronic addresses and the collection of personal information through illicit access to other people's computer systems. The harvesting of electronic addresses occurs when bulk email address lists are compiled using computer programs to automatically mine the internet. The illicit access to collect personal information is usually accomplished by the use of spy-ware or mal ware.
