Discussion: The future of privacy regulation in Australia
On 10 March 2020 we discussed potential upcoming privacy reform in Australia in the webinar "Digital Platforms and Privacy Issues in Australia", which was co-hosted with OneTrust DataGuidance.
The Australian Government has committed to significant privacy reform in its response to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) ground-breaking Digital Platforms Inquiry, which recognised the intersection of privacy, competition and consumer protection issues in online markets.
As discussed in the webinar, in the short term, the Government proposes to introduce a Social Media Privacy Reforms legislation package and, over 2020/21, the Government will consider whether broader reform of Australia's privacy legislation is required to empower consumers, protect their data and best serve the Australian economy. The webinar discusses the implications of these reforms for businesses.
