DQ is delighted to welcome Esme Scott to the firm. Esme has joined as a Paralegal after finishing university. Many of our clients tell us they want to know more about the DQ team. In response to this we sat down with Esme to ask her a few questions about her experience to date and what she hopes for the future.

Where did you study?

I studied LLB Law at the university of Hull graduating in June 2020. During my three years at university I enrolled in a Debt and Finance Pro Bono Scheme for a year. This was a scheme for prisoners in HM Prison, Hull. I also completed two out of three rounds in the University of Hull Client Interviewing Competition and as a result of this I was selected to enrol in the Law Clinic Module in my third year, which allowed me to have my own clients. Throughout my time at university I was a member of Hull University Netball Squad and the Intramural Captain/Coach for a year. So far, my experiences at university of Hull have been the best three years of my life however, I am glad to be back on the Island and excited to start the next chapter in my law career.

What are you doing now?

I have now joined the fantastic team at DQ Advocates as a Paralegal. I am currently based in the Corporate Department and had the opportunity to work with some members of the Dispute Resolution Department, both of which I am enjoying immensely. In addition, I am studying the Legal Practice Course and Master of Laws in Professional Legal Practice full time and remotely with the University of Law. Being able to work at DQ whilst completing my studies is fantastic and I believe it will put me in good stead for my future legal career.

Why DQ?

I originally organised potential work experience with DQ in March 2020, however, along came Covid-19 and the work-experience programme over summer was put on pause. After lockdown I decided to reach out again to DQ and after two interviews I was offered the Paralegal position. I was very lucky to be offered the position as it fitted so perfectly with my studies. Obviously, without hesitation, I accepted!

What do you do in your spare time?

I have been horse riding since the age of 4 and for the past two years I have offered a range of equestrian services across the Island; so it is safe to say I do a lot of horse riding in my spare time! I also love going to the gym however, after being away at university for three years I have missed my family and friends so spending time with them has got to be my favourite thing to do.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully qualified and practicing as an Advocate. At this moment in time I am not sure in what area I would like to specialise, however, I am hopeful that after completing my studies and working for a number of the advocates at DQ I will have a better idea of which sector is for me.

What's something not many people know about you?

This is a difficult question. I not sure that many people would know about my horse riding but I have already talked about that! I don't think many people know I can draw and that I took Art and Design at 'A' Level and did very well. I have not had the time to do any art work as pursuing my law career takes up most of my time. Perhaps when I have completed my qualifications there will be time?

What are you most excited for in your career?

The satisfaction of helping people who really need it the most. I started the process to become an Advocate after a close family friend was seriously injured after a hit and run involving a drunk driver. The system failed her, and she was offered no help or support throughout the whole process. This scenario confirmed to me that I want to make a difference to people's lives no matter the situation.
