Daniel A. Cody, a partner in Jones Day's Health Care & Life Sciences Practice based in the Firm's San Francisco Office, has been named to the Daily Journal's list of "Top Health Care Lawyers" for his work counseling and defending hospitals, health systems, post-acute care providers, and other health care entities. Mr. Cody provides regulatory compliance counseling and leads civil fraud and abuse investigations and litigation, particularly under the civil False Claims Act and similar state laws, as well as guidance to digital health and medical technology companies in navigating the current health care regulatory scheme. Mr. Cody, who co-leads Jones Day's Digital Health initiative, noted for the Daily Journal how the response to the coronavirus pandemic is speeding up the previously slow pace of telemedicine. "In the current crisis we're very active in telemed," Mr. Cody said. "It's a technology that's been around but not widely implemented due to the lack of reimbursement [by insurers]. But now with the crisis, distance between patients and providers makes sense. We'll see it more and more."

Mr. Cody's recent matters include: representing a hospital system in connection with two novel federal and California False Claims Act investigations alleging improper arrangements with Medi-Cal managed health care plans; serving as part of a multidisciplinary team providing strategic counsel and health care regulatory advice to several Bay Area direct-to-consumer telemedicine and technology companies; representing a durable medical equipment manufacturer in connection with a Medicare/Medi-Cal False Claims Act investigation alleging violation of California best price requirements; and leading an international team with Jones Day colleagues in China, Hong Kong, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia providing multidisciplinary guidance to a preeminent hospital system in connection with their international telemedicine offering.
