Sophie Fletcher, first year trainee in our banking department, discusses the start of her traineeship.
Well, time really is flying! I am two months into my traineeship and I cannot believe how quickly it is going. I was really excited to be returning to Brodies after completing a summer placement in the firm's Corporate department after my third year of the LLB. It was comforting to see some familiar faces, both fellow placement students and other colleagues I previously worked alongside, but also great to meet new trainees and other members of the firm for the first time.
The Brodies traineeship starts with an induction programme and a number of training sessions to help you learn more about the firm, how things are done on a day-to-day basis, and to ensure that you know who to contact with any questions. Aside from being an essential part of the learning process, the induction and training also helps you get to know the other trainees and to ease you in to the traineeship. Additionally, there is a buddy and mentor scheme to ensure that you are fully supported in your new role.
My first seat is in the Banking department in Edinburgh. After thoroughly enjoying the transactional work I was exposed to during my summer placement I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to work in Banking. I consider myself to be very lucky to be part of a team that dedicates a lot of time to training and taking the time to explain complex transactions and how my work fits in. There are currently three newly qualified solicitors within the team as well as a second year trainee which has meant there has always been someone to answer my 'silly' questions and offer help when required.
The work so far has been pretty varied and I have received work from numerous members of the team. I have been involved in some drafting, document reviews, security registrations, research and company searches, to name a few. A traineeship with Brodies affords you many opportunities and exposes you some of Scotland's leading solicitors. You are also exposed to a variety of clients and transactions which is not only interesting, but also develops your communication and legal skills. A Banking seat also requires you to work closely with other departments on more complex transactions which gives you wider exposure to the firm and broadens your understanding of how the various departments all fit together. Now that I am beginning to think ahead to our first performance review I am really grateful for the breadth of work I have been exposed to and the opportunities I've had so far.
Last but not least, the social side. Brodies arranges a number of firm-wide fund-raising events and take part in many charity activities to raise money for their charity partner, Maggie's. This means that there are always opportunities to get involved in something fun for a good cause. There are also a number of sports and activities taking place in and around the office such as yoga, pilates, running and netball so there are many ways to get to know colleagues outwith your team. Additionally, there is a trainee social committee responsible for arranging events throughout the year. I am looking forward to our upcoming social in Glasgow in a few weeks as it will be great to catch up with the trainees based in the Glasgow office
