Ice Miller partner Thomas Schnellenberger was named 2018 "Lawyer of the Year" in Indianapolis in tax law by Best Lawyers®. Tom's primary practice concentration is in income tax and estate and gift taxation.

We asked Tom: What's the most interesting matter on which you've worked, and why?

"The most interesting matter I have worked on in my career involved the tax shelter legislation passed as part of the 1986 Tax Act. I had a client that was potentially significantly impacted by the legislation, which included some unique and novel concepts not previously used. After extensive research and analysis, I concluded that the legislation should be interpreted in a manner that ameliorated the impact to the client. The IRS chose the client's return for examination and I had extensive discussions with the IRS agent regarding the position. She confided to me that I had her convinced, but while attending a continuing education program, she talked to the national coordinator for the issue who told her there was no way. I asked to speak to the national coordinator but was denied. Ultimately, we litigated the matter in Federal District Court and prevailed."
