The Executive Committee of the Antitrust, UCL and Privacy Section of the California Lawyers Association, the statewide voluntary bar association for all California lawyers, has recognized Morrison & Foerster’s Penelope Preovolos as the 2019 “Antitrust Lawyer of the Year.” Penny is a leading antitrust and consumer protection lawyer, building a career in the antitrust defense bar at a time when few women could do so, let alone do so successfully.
Recognized as a “superb all-around antitrust lawyer” by clients and colleagues, Penny has spent decades defending clients in dozens of high-profile antitrust and unfair competition law cases in California and around the country. Some of her most notable representations include In re Cosmetics Industry Antitrust Litigation; In re Tableware Antitrust Litigation;and American Booksellers Association v. Barnes & Noble.
In addition to her client work, Penny served as one of the first women chairs of the Antitrust and Trade Regulation Section of the State Bar of California; co-chair of MoFo’s antitrust practice for 14 years; and as a member of the Ninth Circuit Advisory Committee on Local Rules and Operations. One of few women in the antitrust field when she joined MoFo in 1980, Penny has been a role model for women in the antitrust bar for decades. Penny views as her proudest accomplishment the women and men she has mentored or sponsored who have gone on to become leaders in the profession at law firms, companies, public interest legal service providers, and the bar.
Penny will receive her award at the “Antitrust Lawyer of the Year” dinner and ceremony on November 14, 2019 at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in the Merchant Exchange Building in San Francisco.
Penny will also be interviewed in a fireside chat at UC Hastings College of the Law on October 1, 2019. Titled “Why I Became a Competition Lawyer – And Am Delighted I Did,” the interview will be conducted by antitrust litigator (and Hastings alum) Francis O. Scarpulla and will include questions about navigating the legal profession as a young lawyer; women in the antitrust bar; mentoring; how antitrust law has changed over four decades of practice; tips for successfully defending antitrust, UCL and state unfair trade practice cases; how to find and keep clients; and much more.
