The Division of Gaming Enforcement announced that around $184
million was wagered on sports in New Jersey in September. That
number is almost twice as much as the roughly $96 million wagered
in August. While the numbers do not match those seen in Nevada, the
numbers are quickly approaching similar levels. In August, Nevada
handled about $247 million in bets. For comparison's sake,
Mississippi and West Virginia, two other states that have legalized
sports betting, took in about $9.8 million and $5 million in the
most of August, respectively. The large upswing corresponds with
the beginnings of the college and NFL
football seasons. In New Jersey, online betting has been the
primary source of wagers as $210 million out of the $336 million
bet so far have been placed online. New Jersey Gaming Enforcement
Division Director David Rebuck has described the numbers as
"stunning".
