Intellectual property counsel Kevin M. Moss and associate Anna C. Schoenfelder co-authored, in concert with privacy law practitioners in the EU and Japan, a chapter in the book "Japanese, American and European Private Information and Data Protection for International Practice," which was published on Oct. 17, 2017. The chapter surveying U.S. law and regulation directed to protecting personal information. The chapter on U.S. data protection laws provides an overview of the main U.S. federal statutes governing personal data security, providing a general summary of each statute, and the applicable enforcement mechanisms and penalties that may be applied for violations. Also briefly introduced are some U.S. data security and privacy regulations, guidance from selected FTC enforcement action decisions as well as some approaches to self-regulation certain industries in the U.S. have taken.
