As we previously wrote about here , on June 5, 2014, the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee approved an amended version of the Opportunity to Compete Act, which is a "ban the box" bill, by a 9-1 vote. On June 24, 2014, the New Jersey Assembly Budget Committee followed suit and approved the same version of the bill by a vote of 8-4. Only two days later, on June 26, 2014, the full Senate and Assembly both passed the bill, which will now head to Governor Chris Christie's desk. After 16 months of opposition and changes, the version of the bill passed by the New Jersey legislature is significantly less onerous on employers than prior versions. If Governor Christie signs it into law, the current version of the bill will take effect 7 months after enactment.
