The incorrigible Alex Jones, of Infowars infamy, is at it again: this time marketing colloidal silver supplements and other products with the claim that they boost immunity and prevent COVID 19. Enter the federal enforcers, who sent Jones a letter last week, warning him about the claims on his website for a number of products under the "SuperSilver" brand name. According to the warning letter, the site sold the products (including toothpaste!) stating that they could mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure COVID-19 and that they are being sold as unapproved new drugs.
The letter "advises" Jones to review his websites, product labels, and other materials to ensure that they do not represent the products as safe and effective for a COVID-19 related use. It also warns Jones that advertising that a product can prevent, treat, or cure human disease without competent and reliable scientific evidence is a violation of the FTC Act, which "may result in legal action seeking a Federal District Court injunction and an order [requiring payment] back to consumers.' The letter demands that Jones report to both the FDA's and FTC's COVID-19 taskforces as to his efforts to fix his advertising within 48 hours.
Bogus health claims. Price gouging. Phony charitable appeals. As if the pandemic weren't awful enough. At least there's rapid response enforcement.
