In June 2011 the Charity Commission announced its Strategic Review of its future role as a regulator following the announcement by the Government that the Commission's budget will be cut by one third. Following on from this Review, on 7 December 2011 the Commission published its Strategic Plan for 2012 to 2015. This sets out the Commission's two strategic priorities going forward, which are:
- Developing the compliance and accountability of the charity sector; and
- Developing the self-reliance of the charity sector.
In delivering these priorities the Commission says it will focus in particular on the following:
Risk
Ensuring that the Commission's intervention will have a real impact, will be proportionate and will be early, thus promoting prevention rather than cure.
Technology
In addition to the Commission using its website and digital communications to provide guidance and information to the public, the Commission will move to a position where all transactions that charities and the public need to carry out with the public are fully digitised.
Organisational effectiveness
This will involve, amongst other things, seeking to deliver year
on year efficiency savings.
Over the coming months we will be reviewing the practical
implications for charities of the implementation of this Strategic
Plan and reporting accordingly, together with how we can fill in
any gaps flowing from the fact that the sector will now be expected
to be more self-reliant.
