The close relationship between entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property, as well as the need to protect the intangibles to monetize innovation; perseverance and field work as bases of entrepreneurship, and the factors that affect the time to get resources with investment funds, are part of the issues that were addressed in the Webinar, "Keys to success of science-based companies technology", which was invited Carolina del Río, CEO of Clarke, Modet & C ° Chile and some entrepreneurs of Chile and abroad.

The space led by Innittia and moderated by its founder, Fernanda Vicente, also attended the young entrepreneur Hans Pieringer, today CEO of Phage Technologies, and Pablo Fernandez, Manager of Fund Larch VC. It was sought to decipher the relevant factors that make a science-based enterprises successful, from its funding, operational challenges, business models, team composition and strategies to publicize the company to the public and relationship with stakeholders.

During the virtual meeting, Rio Carolina presented the Chilean successful venture scientist, entrepreneur and innovator Fernando Fischmann with its draft crystalline lagoons, as a way of understanding the value of Intellectual Property when transforming an idea into business, becoming an intangible asset into something marketable.

In this regard, Carolina del Río explained that understanding that "Intellectual Property is a property right and a tool that makes that property is non-negotiable, it is important to define the best estragia to give value to the intangible, and make that innovation you can generate an economic return. In that definition, the entrepreneur not only needs you identify the type of asset, but also the state of the art and the result is you get to define the type of protection and scope which will be processed". She pointed out also that "if the entrepreneur does not have adequate protection, she/he is wasting his/her talent". In this case, a value that Fischmann developed successfully, not only for its protection strategy, but sales managing to change its business model as it did not come to sell their innovation but rather convinced his customers added value that he gave them their buyers if it were part of innovation, making them more competitive.

At the beginning of his speech, Pablo Fernandez, Manager of Fund Larch VC., wanted to highlight the evolution and radical change that has taken entrepreneurship in Chile in the last decade, as evidenced in the pursuit of programs and different initiatives both at universities, institutes and other organizations. In his view this is because "has generated a strong public policy in the hands of institutions, and today is another level of enterprises that can be seen, with people who are making technology patents world-class, which It allows that funds focused on technology. Since the universities have understood that the publication of papers is not the only way and there are many other opportunities: Start-Up Chile is in its fifteenth version, there are incubators, space co-Work, various bodies that have allowed little little is generating a cultural change at the country level "

Fernandez also explained that Chile has not the Venture Capital industry, investment fund is consolidated, not only in terms of funds but to provide a support service to entrepreneurs. "Investment funds venture capital entering technological early stages, which run not only technological and commercial risks are needed. There are many entrepreneurs with tremendous ideas that do not yet have support to turn them into business, "problematic what they are betting as an investment fund.

While the state supports entrepreneurs, this support is for beginning and it is not enough to the advice or support the process, which directly between the private investor, through a more strategic support in the process.

From the perspective of the entrepreneur, Hans Pieringer, founder and CEO of Phage Technologies, StartUp dedicated to developing products for microbiological control for the food industry, explained the main difficulties he had to develop their business and the importance of learning in that process. "A business idea occurs when someone is willing to pay for a solution and when that happens is because you have a real problem, sometimes the solution is super new technology, but is not addressed to those who really need. When we started with our idea we came out in the newspapers, and we were super happy but we realized that our product was not used where we pointed out, in practice no one paid for our solution. Clearly we had not understood the market value, then we went looking outside to understand what we were wrong. We had worked all our idea from the laboratory. "

Learning paid off and innovation had an important evolution from Milkeeper born, food additive that prevents infectious diarrhea in calves, makes its way towards internationalization by at least 5 markets. In a final thought on how you can take with low capital being young and without much experience, Pieringer shared with virtual assistants need to "have fun, stay humble and go outside, away from the comfort zone, as it is the way to have a contact with reality and to discern what is important to investigate and what not.
