On May 27th, 1997, Mexico executed an Agreement with the EU regarding the Mutual Recognition and Protection of Spirits Designations, in order to improve the marketing of such beverages on their respective markets.

The Annex I of the above mentioned Agreement contains the Spirits of the EU and the Annex II those belonging to Mexico.

On January 16th, 2020, the Government of the Mexico and the EU mutually agreed to replace Annex I and Annex II of the Agreement, in order to update the list of spirits designations, effective as of January 31, 2020.

With regard to the amendments performed to Annex II, corresponding to the beverages belonging to Mexico, the protection for the designations "Tequila", "Mezcal", "Sotol" and "Charanda" is maintained, and the protection for "Bacanora" and "Raicilla" is now implemented.
