On 23 May, Insurance Europe published its 2017-2018 Annual Report (Report), setting out the main European insurance industry issues in the past year. The Report also marks the appointment of the new President of Insurance Europe, Andreas Brandstetter, who will serve as President until 2021. President Brandstetter comments on two of the main challenges which the industry will face in 2018: (i) preparation for and the subsequent implications of the 2018 Solvency II review; and (ii) the implications of Brexit on cross-border reinsurance activities.

The Report contains a wide range of topics including: overcoming the protection gap; the cost of climate change on (re)insurers; and a discussion of new data sources available to motor and cyber risk insurers.

The Report also features guest articles, including contributions from Mark Wilson, group CEO of Aviva, Bernard Delas, vice-chairman of the French banking and insurance supervisory authority and Antonio Huertas, chairman & CEO of MAPFRE.
