March 17, 2017 – Effective May 1, 2017, Romanian and Bulgarian citizens will be able to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTa) and will no longer require a visa to visit Canada if they:

  • Have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years, or
  • Have a valid United States non-immigrant visa.

Starting December 1, 2017, the plan is to eliminate the requirement for all Romanians and Bulgarians to apply for a Canadian visa and to have these citizens just apply for an eTA. Between May 1, 2017 and December 1, 2017, Romanians and Bulgarians who have not had an Canadian visa issued in the last 10 years and who do not have a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa will require a visa to visit Canada.


Effective May 1, 2017, Brazilian citizens will be able to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTa) and will no longer require a visa to visit Canada if they:

  • Have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years, or
  • Have a valid United States non-immigrant visa.
