This Energy and Resources Legal Update takes a closer look at the Mineral and Energy Resources and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2020 (MEROLA Bill), introduced into Queensland Parliament earlier this year.

The Bill has just gone through the committee stage where it was reviewed by the State Development, Natural Resources and Agricultural Industry Development Committee.

Overall the Committee supports the introduction of the MEROLA Bill, however, it has made nine recommendations. The Queensland government now has three months to respond to the recommendations made in the Committee's report which may have implications for the standard of negligence that will apply in relation to the offence of industrial manslaughter.

This report recaps the features of the Bill and looks at the recommendations made by the Committee.
