Prime Minister Morrison announces travel ban effective 9.00 pm Friday 20th March

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that effective 9.00pm tomorrow (Friday 20th March) a travel ban will be imposed on all non-resident and non-Australian citizens entering Australia.

In a similar vein, the Tasmanian Government announced this morning that all non-essential travellers to that state will be quarantined for a 14 day period on arrival from midnight Friday. Essential travellers will include medical professionals and essential trade workers.

At present there is no clarity on the meaning of 'non-resident' or whether exemptions apply to family and other relatives of Australian citizens. It is also unclear whether persons who have already begun their travel to Australia will be permitted entry after 9.00pm Friday the 20th March.

Hammond Taylor will continue to monitor the situation and advise on the rapidly changing situation.
