Global law firm Clyde & Co has today announced the hire of Nic van der Reyden to bolster its leading Australian marine group.

Nic van der Reyden joins in Sydney from HFW and specialises in shipping and commercial dispute resolution and litigation, acting for shipowners, charterers, mining and logistics companies and P&I Clubs in relation to a broad cross section of maritime matters including in respect of charterparties, COAs, bills of lading and ship building, sale and purchase disputes and regulatory matters.

He has extensive experience in international commercial arbitration and mediation and has conducted proceedings in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Africa, in addition to in Australia.

Nic will work closely with Maurice Thompson, partner and National Group Head (Maritime & Commodities) and the marine group's other significant recent hire, partner Ernest van Buuren, who joined the firm from Norton Rose Fulbright.

Maurice Thompson comments: "Nic's arrival is a crucial next step in the development of our marine group in Australia, following the recent hire of Ernest van Buuren. Nic's broad-based marine practice and strong reputation in the market will bolster our offering to clients and the marine market in Australia and greater APAC. Having worked closely with him in previous roles, I know Nic is an excellent fit for the firm and our clients."

Nic van der Reyden comments: "I see huge opportunities for the growth of my practice as part of Clyde & Co's marine group in Australia, the wider APAC region and indeed globally, where Clyde & Co has a preeminent maritime law practice globally and a long held reputation for excellence. I am excited to be joining a group of driven and forward-thinking lawyers who work together with a genuine team ethos to deliver the best quality service to clients."

Clyde & Co has the largest marine practice worldwide, with over 150 lawyers across Clyde & Co's global network of 50+ offices. The marine group provides expertise to clients throughout the entire maritime industry: insurers, trading companies, owners, charterers, P&I clubs, shipbuilders, salvors, financial institutions, port authorities and governments.

This latest announcement follows the firm's recent hiring of four insurance partners in Australia, Nicole Wearne, Ganga Narayanan, Mark Attard and Jehan-Philippe Wood, earlier this year. In 2019 across APAC the firm hired Fei Kwok (Norton Rose Fulbright) and Peter Coles (HFW) in Hong Kong, Nicholas Lum (Ince) in Shanghai, and Jon Howes and Sean Hardy in Singapore (both Pinsent Masons), demonstrating the cross-sector breadth of the firm in the region.
