The Malaysian Parliament's website was recently hacked into, sparking an inquiry by the police and pushes for a secure security system.

The word from computer experts is that many Malaysian Government websites are vulnerable to such hacking attacks owing to a lack of Internet security measures. In fact, the Malaysian Berita Harian has reported that there are about 700 government websites which could be hacked by vandals if security levels were not up to scratch. Apparently, 50 government websites had already been attacked by hackers before this latest case.

Besides Parliament's website, the University Teknologi Malaysia website was also not spared.

The hacking attack on the Parliament's website was reportedly not politically motivated. Investigations by information technology and computer security experts have so far revealed that both attacks took place from Brazil.

The hacker of Parliament's website, who went only by the name of Topeira, moved the front page of the website. He replaced it by leaving behind a two-line sentence in a foreign language as well as the address of the Brazilian rock group, Garbage. Apparently, the hacking attacks were not very serious and it seemed as if the hacker was only testing the security system protecting Parliament's website.

Investigations on the mater are continuing.
