The labels on alcoholic beverages may soon be required to include health warnings, under draft amendments being considered by the Polish parliament.
The amendment proposed by MPs to the Law on Counteracting Alcoholism would require companies bringing alcoholic beverages to market to include information on the labels:
- about the harmful effects of alcohol, especially for the disabled and for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or
- about the risks of drink-driving
It is also proposed to fine anyone bringing to market alcohol without such warnings on the label.
The detailed requirements are set out in draft regulations from the Minister of Health, including:
- the size and wording of the proposed captions
- the requirement to use capital letters on a red background in a part of the label comprising at least 15% of the packaging
The amendments are claimed to be necessary because of the need to increase social awareness of the threats and damage involved in drinking alcohol.
