Google, Amazon and Apple are teaming up to develop an open-source smart home standard to ensure that any supported smart home device bought will work, regardless of which smartphone or voice assistant is being used to control it. The Companies are forming a group called 'Project Connected Home over IP' for the project which will utilize technology from each of the three companies' smart home systems — Apple's HomeKit, Amazon's Alexa, and Google's Weave. The standard will work alongside existing connectivity protocols — like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — rather than seeking to replace them. The first draft of the project is expected to release in late 2020.
